Hi Lovelies,

I hope you find my ideas and answers useful, please find my links below and please do get in touch!

What makes a good make up artist (MUA)?
Someone who strives for creativity, pushes the boundaries with make up, breaks the rules with products and looks. Someone who inspires others with their vision.

What is the most exciting part of being a MUA?
Every day is different; it is such an exciting industry to be part of. There is always something new to learn, new products been launched, I love having no rules for how creative I can be with my make up looks for my portfolio. I have total freedom in what I do. That is a great feeling.

What are the challenges and pitfalls of being a MUA?
Challenges are definitely trying to be seen, there are so many make up artists out there therefore you have to make sure you stand out from the crowd.

What are your top 3 items in your make up kit?
In my personal kit, Make Up Academy bronzer it is only £3 and I use it for contouring my face and eyes. Illamasqua Masquara in Raven, one of the best mascaras I have used to date and lastly Kryolan Lip Stain in shade Swing. I have the whole range of these in my professional kit but I cannot resist shade Swing for me it is my favourite colour a gorgeous pale pink.

What is the most underrated make up product?
I would say Shu Uemura UV Underbase Mousse. It is more that it is not underrated but not many people use this and it is the best primer I have come across, I have been using this in my professional kit for nearly three years now. It is a little pricey but the difference it makes is so worth it.

What are your go to brands?
For me personally Illamasqua, Kryolan, NARS and Make Up Academy.
For my professional kit Kryolan, Illamasqua, Laura Mercier, Shu Uemura, NARS, Urban Decay, Dermalogica and a little MAC.

What products do you feel are over hyped?
Definitely MAC. There are so many more brands, which I think personally, are much better. I like MAC, but it is not the only brand out there, but a lot of people think MAC is one of the best. I disagree. Kryolan is around the same price band and they are way above MAC for professional make up artists and for people who want that extra special make up in there make up bag. The range they have is huge and caters to more areas of professional make up.

What would be your top tip for an aspiring MUA?
Stand out from the crowd
Get good training, I trained at AOFM in London (Academy of Freelance Make Up) I knew if this was the career I wanted I needed to learn from the best.
Network as much as you can online and in person
Build a very strong portfolio with unique work in
Market yourself as well as you can via social media platforms
Be consistent
Assist if you feel that is right for you, I have never assisted and it has not done me any harm. I would only ever assist other artists who I aspire to, whose style I adore and I would feel I could learn from such as Caroline Saulnier and Ayami Nishimura. I suggest you keep these things in mind when thinking of assisting.
